The precise origin of Birthstones is disputable. Some scholars believe it started with the breastplate of Aaron, a ceremonial item worn by the Jewish High Priest and set with 12 stones, each representing one of the tribes of Israel. Many cultures had their own list of stones, but in 1912 the Jewellers Association of America put its weight behind a “standard” list which is still in use today all over the world. This is known as the Modern List.
